Sunglasses that Do More than Just Block the Sun
Sunglasses serve a pretty basic function (besides trying to make you look cool, sexy, or look like a douchebag). They protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays. However, unfortunately besides blocking the sun they don’t do much. So we decided to look around and find sunglasses that can not only block the sun, but do something else at the same time. We found 6 pairs of sunglasses that fit this bill.
We’ve ordered them in from boring-est extra function to most exciting bonus function(s):
6. Folding Aviator Sunglasses
For a nominal $300 you can own a pair of sunglasses that fold in half. They only come in aviator style, but if you really want sunglasses that take up a little less space than your normal pair than these might do it for you. Not the most exciting, but technically still meets our criteria of having an extra “function.”
5. Calvin Klein 4 Gig USB Sunglasses
When I think Calvin Klein the last thing I think about are USB drives. Instead I think of overpriced “fashionable” clothes. However, they have surprised me by putting out sunglasses that sport a 4gig USB drive hidden in the right arm. It’s a pretty overpriced USB drive at $200, but if you are a super-fashionable tech nerd, maybe these will appeal to you.
4. Oakly Rockr MP3 Sunglasses
For the people who find wearing sunglasses and bringing your iPod too much of a hassle the geniuses at Oakly have constructed your ultimate fantasy product. For around $250 you get a pair of sunglasses with a built-in mp3 player and bluetooth headphones. It’s bluetooth enable so you can also stream music from your cell phone or any other device with bluetooth (it would have it also had a built in mic so you could chat on the phone. You can make an argument that they are good for jogging or running (since you can carry one less device), though you are stuck with the built-in headphones.
3. DVR Camcorder Spy Sunglasses
We recently profiled these sneaky little sunglasses with video recording capability. Beside blocking the sun they have the uncanny ability to record women in locker rooms. Who knew that would be such a popular feature? Also useful for surveillance and undercover narcotics work.
2. Self Energy Converting (Solar) Sunglasses
Technically just a prototype and not a real product you can buy, these sunglasses have a thin film of solar photo voltaic cells on the sunglasses lenses that can charge your portable devices when connected. I think I made this observation before, but what can’t they put solar cells on these days? Solar underwear anyone?
1. Uber Shades – Swiss Army Knife Sunglasses
Another product concept (unfortunately no prototype) put out by the Not-So-Bright company are sunglasses that just have every tool that you just might need–stuff like paint brushes, combs, knives, scissors extra. They should just call them Macguyver’s. While they are ridiculous looking, depending on the price, I might be interested.
BONUS: Myvu Shades Video Watching Sunglasses
Technically Myvu Shades aren’t promoted and sold as sunglasses (even though they have “Shades” in their product name). They are glasses that you wear and connect to a video playing device (like an iPod) that then projects the video inside the lenses so you feel like you are watching a huge movie when in fact it is tiny. But why not wear them like sunglasses? Looks like they block some sun. For anyone who wants to watch movies as the commute to work these could be the perfect sunglasses…especially at about $150.
